Husband's Public Plea
This was left in a Michael's craft store by a weary husband! I feel he should have known better than to accompany his wife inside in first place. What do you think? Was he just being nice and gentlemanly, or was he naive and clueless??? My bet is that he doesn't make a return trip with her!

Look Forward, Not Back
There is no reason to look backward, the past is gone. Focus on the future and all the great things that are ahead of you. God never promised us a daily rose garden but He did promise to be with us every step of the way. The road in this photo looks interesting...as does the road ahead of you. Don't be afraid to move forward. You will never be alone.

An Oldie But A Goodie...
I can't say why but seeing this in print made me smile. It was one of many songs that I sang with my mother when I was young. We have a lot of others - we were in Girl Scouts together (to clarify any confusion - she was a leader, I was a scout). I can remember many silly songs sung around the campfire. One of my favorites is Boom Boom Ain't it Great to be Crazy! Did you ever sing that one? Yes? No? Well, here are the lyrics to either remind you or introduce you. So smile and enjoy!
Boom, Boom, Ain't It Great to be Crazy?
A horse and a flea and three blind mice
Sat on a curbstone shooting dice
The horse he slipped and fell on the flea
"Whoops," said the flea, "There's a horsey on me!"
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Way down South where bananas grow
A flea stepped on an elephant's toe
The elephant cried, with tears in his eyes
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Way up North where there's ice and snow
There lived a penguin and his name was Joe
He got so tired of black and white
He wore pink slacks to the dance last night!
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Eli, Eli had some socks
A dollar a pair and a nickel a box
The more you wear 'em the better they get
And you put 'em in the water and they don't get wet!
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Called myself on the telephone
Just to hear that golden tone
Asked myself out for a date
Said be ready 'bout half-past eight!
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Took myself to the picture show
Sat myself on the very last row
Wrapped my arms around my waist
Got so fresh I slapped my face!
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?

Guardian Angels
I am praying today for my father and his medical team as he goes in for a procedure at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. May all go smoothly and he recover quickly. I am praying for my mother also, who is sitting there in a waiting room, alone. I wish I was there with you, Mom. I love you both so very much.

A Magic Portal
It's amazing how every book I read takes me somewhere else. It doesn't matter where just as long as it removes me from the place that I am. That is the magic of reading and writing. To be able to take others on a journey invoked from your own mind is thrilling. So whether you're a reader, writer, or both - enjoy the ride!

The Monuments Men by Robert M. Edsel
Book Summary:
At the same time Adolf Hitler was attempting to take over the western world, his armies were methodically seeking and hoarding the finest art treasures in Europe. The Fuehrer had begun cataloging the art he planned to collect as well as the art he would destroy: "degenerate" works he despised.
In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Monuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture.
Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments Men and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis.
The Monuments Men is the book club pick for the month. We'll be discussing it Tuesday, July 8th. I'll post comments on Wednesday July, 9th. Pick up a copy today and join us!

Follow the River by James Alexander Thom
Follow the River by James Alexander Thom was this month's book club read. This is a fictional novel based on the true ordeal of Mary Draper Ingels, her capture, and her thousand mile journey home.
Summary: Mary Ingles was twenty-three, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months they held her captive. Both nothing could imprison her spirit.
With the rushing Ohio River as her guide, Mary Ingles walked one thousand miles through an untamed wilderness no white woman had ever seen. Her story lives on - extraordinary testimony to the indomitable strength of one pioneer woman who risked her life to return to her own people.
I had read this book once before, at age twenty, and now again, thirty years later. I have to say that the personal journey I was led while reading it the first time was far different than the one I took reading it at this particular juncture in my life. Perhaps (I did not yet have children) I was young and it was only a pioneer story that I read and really held no tangible comparison's for me. I'm not going to go into detail about the story as its' a personal journey for you to contend with, but for me, it was much more personal this time around.
I will tell you that the story came alive during this read. The character's are vivid, nearly jumping off the page. I felt Mary's fear and her grief. I felt her strength and her weakness. I felt her shame and her triumph. I felt her anger and her deep faith and thankfulness. It was a long trek home for her, one step, one breath, one heartbeat at a time. I can't say that I would have had her strength and fortitude. James Alexander Thom walked the route that Mary traveled, giving us the cold, hard grit of her journey. The story is as true an accounting, I believe, as can be told nearly two-hundred-fifty (and then some) years later. Though it is a grueling read, I highly recommend it. This is the kind of book that book club's are destined to read and discuss.

The Perfect Afternoon
Oh yes, this would make the perfect afternoon, wouldn't it? Though the winning lotto ticket might solve a few problems, I'm fairly certain it would bring a lot of others to my doorstep as well so I think I would just like to slide into that relaxing hammock with a cold drink and good book. That would be my perfect afternoon choice. How about you? Hammock or winning lotto ticket? Which would you pick?

"Receet" For Washing Clothes
I am sharing a tattered, yellowed article with you that appeared in a local Kansas newspaper many years ago. It was given to my mother by my great-grandmother...
Years ago a Kentucky grandmother gave a new bride
the following “receet” for washing clothes. It appears below just as it
was written and despite the spelling, has a bit of philosophy:
1) Bilt fire in backyard to heet kettle of rain water.
2) Set tubs so smoke won’t blow in eyes if wind is pert.
3) Shave one hole cake lie sope in bilin water.
4) Sort things. Make 3 piles. 1 pile white, 1 pile cullord, 1 pile work britches and rages.
5) Stir flour in cold water to smooth, then thin down with bilin water.
6) Rub dirty spots on board. Scrub hard, then bile. Rub cullored, don’t bile, just rench in starch.
7) Take white things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then rench, blew and starch.
8) Spread tee towels on grass.
9) Hang old rags on fence.
10) Pore rench water in flour beds.
11) Scrub porch with soapy water
12) Turn tubs upside down.
13) Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with side combs, brew cup of tee, set and rest and rack a spell and count your blessins.
Hang this up above your automatic washer, and when things look real bleak, read it again! (And count your blessings!)

Feeling Rich
It's amazing how much we take for granted. I often get caught up in the moment and forget to take inventory of all those things that I do have...a roof over my head, a job that I enjoy, my children and grandchildren, living just down the street from my parents, the longstanding relationships that I have and those that are new and blooming. This life is not about "stuff." Why does it seem so difficult to remember that? Maybe it's time that we (I) make a better effort tdo so.

Generational Impaired Hearing
"Why?" was always an ify question. Giving an answer could be quite comfortable or not, especially with a child that seemed more inquisitive than the others. Or perhaps, he was just more confrontational! They say that the child you butt heads with the most is the one that's the most like you. Did you ever have this problem? I hope I'm not the only one!

Happy Father's Day!
Dad,
I want you to know how very special you are to me and how much I value our relationship. You have always been there for me, whether I deserved it or not, solid as a rock. You've taught me right from wrong, good from bad, how to give and how to walk away when I needed to. To be caught up in a hug, held within your loving embrace is one of the best places on this earth. I am proud to be your daughter and I love you with all my heart.
Happy Father's Day!

The Saturday Mornings of my Youth
I remember my brother and I doing this every weekend! ABC even had the educational Schoolhouse Rock program so we actually learned something. Unfortunately, you won't find anything like that today. My grandfather worked a large paper route in Lawrence, Kansas and would sometimes bring us fresh donuts on Saturday morning! As an adult, my Saturday's now consist of a healthy breakfast and a cup of hot tea followed by house cleaning, laundry, and quick glimpses of Flip This House on A&E as I walk through the room. (I learn so much watching that show and most anything on HGTV!) Boy howdy - those were the days!

Craft (& Other) Supplies
Yes - ha ha! I believe that I can say the same thing about books. I can say I won't buy any more books until I've read all those that I have but I know that is a BIG, FAT LIE! I can pass up alcohol and food, but I can not pass up books. They are everywhere. I can rein in the wallet funds for only so long. If one catches my eye, it's in my hand, through the check-out line and home before I my self control is in check. Lord please help me, because I can not help myself.

Someplace Special
It doesn't matter how much money you have, how large your dwelling place might be, or how fancy your car is. These things are material. What truly matters your impact on those around you. Think about how many people are in your thoughts, prayers, and held in your heart. Then think about about how many may feel the same about you. It truly makes you feel blessed, doesn't it?

When to Beware
Have you ever heard these words or something similar? The suck-up-because-I-messed-up agenda. Boy, I sure have. From little faces to big ones! You just know it's going to be bad but how can you be overly mad at that face? (Little faces tend to fair better than big ones - the big ones should know better!) I can think back to the boys when they were young and smile as I recall times when they said or did something that was not approved behavior but it took everything I had to keep a straight face. Sometimes discipline is just plain hard. Others, not so much. Just remember when you get this look - it probably won't amount to a hill of beans tomorrow (or in a week or so). One day, you'll probably even look back at it with fond memories.

Go Ahead, Dive in
It's Monday! Time is ticking away so WAKE UP! You have to get up and dive in, in order to bring those dreams to fruition. It's your life, your dreams - make them happen. Or at least give it your best. The only person stopping you is you.

Little Girl Dreams
Every girl has a dream. Most little girls want to be a princess. They want to dress up in pretty, lacy, shiny dresses with wide skirts that swirl when they twirl. They want to wear sparkly shoes with bright colorful bows in their hair or twinkly tiaras on their heads. They want to paint their finger and toenails like their mommy's do. They want to pretend to be all grown up.
Yes, grown up girls have dreams too. Maybe the princess phase has faded and they have moved on to more plausible yearnings. Maybe it's no longer about shiny sparkles and twirling fantasies but the possibility of new things...finding the perfect partner, landing the ultimate job, nourishing a healthy family. Whether those dreams are large or small, we all long for them. Don't be afraid to reach for the stars. Yes, there is always a possibility of failure, but without failure, there is no learning curve, no growth. Failure is only the closing of one door, one lost opportunity. Another door will open, another opportunity is on the horizon. Dream big. Dig in. Believe that you can change an ordinary life into an extraordinary one. No matter what age, you have that power. We all do. Are you brave enough to change the world? Or at the very least, to change your own. You are the only one who can.

Did You Know...
This is so very true. There are people whose presence in your life can brighten a room and when they leave you to go about their daily lives, you feel their absence. That is truly someone special, someone who blesses your life and makes you appreciate all things - big and small. The next time you see them, be sure to tell them how special they are and how much they brighten your life. I'm sure they already know but it's always nice to hear it out loud anyway.

Best Friends
This happens at my house all the time. You'd think it was the larger dog with the agenda but no, it's the small dog..the one sporting a pot belly body with a small chihuahua head stuck on top. He doesn't miss a meal, a treat, or a dust bunny. What a mess...a wonderful, beautiful, loving mess they are.

Let Your Light Shine
There is strength in being a caterpillar.
There is power in beginning again.
When one door closes, another opens.
So spread your wings and fly!
