This weekend is the annual Balloon Fest in Longview, Texas. This picture was taken yesterday. Wouldn't it be nice to see it in person? I don't think I could ever go up in one. The older I get the more I can't deal with heights, but it sure would be fun to watch from the ground. This may be a trip to add to the ole bucket list!
Six days ago, astronaut
Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's
sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly
kills him & forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead,
Mark finds himself stranded & completely alone with no way to even
signal Earth that he’s alive—& even if he could get word out, his
supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are,
though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery,
unforgiving environment or plain-old "human error" are much more likely
to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his
ingenuity, his engineering skills—& a relentless, dogged refusal to
quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle
after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the
impossible odds against him?
This book was my book club read for July by first time author Andy Weir. We are reading a different genre each month to give us a more rounded reading structure. This month's genre was Science Fiction. The choice is not my normal cup of tea (which says a lot for the book club, yay!) but I have to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I was sucked in from the first sentence on page one through the last sentence. It was a bit "techincal" however, what else would you expect from a NASA mechanical engineer/botanist character? I mean, he's been left alone on Mars and no one knows he's there! His ingenuity is as thoroughly entertaining as his sense of humor. Believe me, a lot of things do not go his way.
Need another carrot? Hollywood has made a movie out off this book which will be shown at theaters later this year (November or December). I urge you to pick up a copy even though it may not be your preferred genre. It truly was an awesome read and I don't think that you'll be disappointed.
This might be a problem for me. Maybe I need to fireproof my office. Or better yet, instead of buying a gun safe, I need to purchase a book safe! I will get right on that! (So will my husband; he knows my books make me happy. A happy wife means a happy life, right?!!)
Just think of all the ammunition we gather as we soak up the words on a page. The more pages we consume, the more knowledge we gain and the more dangerous we become. Cheers to you, my well-read friends. We are dangerous creatures!
Tis the season for afternoon/evening thunderstorms in Florida. If my little guy could climb this high, he would be in the sink as well. Poor thing. He is a nervous wreck every afternoon right now. He paces, shakes and whines. It rained late into the night a couple of nights ago. I had to pack pillows around him and then my own arms (thank goodness he is small) so that he could calm down. He finally fell asleep with his head on my shoulder. Needless to say, it was a long night.
Isn't this the truth? I really wish that the movie makers out there in Hollywood and beyond would read more. Maybe a light bulb would come on and they'd stop remaking the same movie plots over and over and over again!
"That
thing is huge!" -- After Rachel Taylor, the woman in this picture,
heard those words in an Old Navy store, she felt compelled to share this
powerful story on the company's Facebook page:
"Old Navy,
thank you for having adorable clothes for all shapes & sizes. I'd
like to tell you the story behind this tank top and why I'll be rocking
it tomorrow for July 4th. Today I was shopping in Old Navy,
standing in between a teenage girl and her mom. The girl picked up a
plus-size tank top, showed it to her mom and said, "Look! Me and
So-and-so can fit in this tank top!" Her mom laughed and said, "Yeah,
you could! That thing is huge!" I couldn't help it; I started crying. I
guess the girl and her mom walked away. I have no idea. My husband
walked me out of the store to the car. I sat in the car crying for a
long time but eventually went back inside to finish my shopping. I ended
up buying that tank top because, it turns out, I look fierce in it! Be
kind. Think about others before you speak. And if someone hurts you, you
have to move on." I don't care who you are, every one of us has issues. We are also all children of God and deserve to be loved equally, fiercely, and totally. Can I get an Amen?
Melt
butter, stir in seasoned salt and Italian seasoning, dunk saltine
crackers, set 'em on a rack over a baking sheet, and bake 'em at 275 for
20-25 minutes. Yummy with soup or salad! Or anything, for that matter.
Our little Blu turned 3 on July 1st and his brother by another mother Biscuit turns 3 on July 4th. It's time for us to celebrate! We love our boys. Our lives certainly would not be the same without you both.
I'm especially crazy happy today because Mom and I are having lunch and going shopping today. We are taking a little out of town trip for my son and his wife's baby shower so we're preparing to pack our suitcases! I am so looking forward to our time on the road together! Love you Mom!
