Santa's Little Helpers

Oh yes, we have Santa's little helpers at our house.  You can't open the refrigerator or pantry door without an audience at your feet.  I love those little guys!

The Lure of Temptation

Ah, this is why our tree is propped up on a platform an additional eight inches off the floor.  We took away one temptation but I am quite certain that we only traded it for another!  I put the wrapped doggie presents from Santa in the tree and not under it.  All other gifts will travel across town to reside under my parents tree tomorrow.  Yes - I have taken the Scrooge approach as far as my pets are concerned but it makes for a happy doggie-momma!  Have a great day!

Dear Santa...

Oh, those were the days!  My brother and I could hardly wait for the Sears & Roebuck and JC Penney catalogs to arrive on our doorstep every holiday season.  They were 400-500 pages large!  We would lay on the living room floor and pour over the 200-page toy sections, dog earring pages of our favorite hopefuls!  Gosh, I miss those younger days!  All that magic and excitement rolled into the house right along with the fresh cut Christmas tree.  With huge discount entities like Walmart and Target, those stores are not the powerhouses they used to be and those catalogs are now non-existent.  Now that we're grown, we have new traditions and young family members of our own to share the joy of the season with.  I wouldn't trade the time we spend gathered together for anything in this world.

A Little Christmas Trivia

Books for Christmas?!  I can definitely adopt this practice!
If anyone asks me what I want, I always smile and say...
"A book store gift card, please."
Happy Thursday!

Beware of Thieves on the Prowl

I needed lot's of these yesterday.  I was working in a local dollar store (I'm a merchandiser for American Greetings) where I was restocking Christmas and Everyday cards.  I had my tote bag with me that included my paperwork, scanner, box knife, water, trail mix, and my small purse, both were zipped closed.  The bag was lying in the bottom of a shopping cart beneath a large cardboard box I had sitting lengthwise across the top of the cart so that I could pull out the card packs, remove the plastic around the pack and place them in the empty pockets on the store display.  The bag and cart were next to me the entire six hours I worked the store.

There were people walking the aisle shopping for Christmas cards while I was working to put them up.  I am not a prejudice person by nature but four young (20ish) Hispanic folks walked through my aisle, and then kept circling back.  Finally, one of the two women stopped beside my box and started rummaging through the remaining cards packs inside it.  I asked it I could help her and she shook her head.  The couple beside her began speaking in rapid-fire Spanish and distracted me just long enough for the fourth male to reach is arm between the back of the box and the front of the shopping cart to unzip both my bag and my purse, remove my wallet and take both the cash and my debit card.  Then they were gone.

Thirty minutes later when I took the empty box and trash to the storage area in the back of the store to discard, I noticed that my bag was open and my wallet was lying on top of my open purse.  Immediately, I checked to find the missing items.  I reported it to the store manager who said he would check the video tape but didn't think that the theft would be seen from the camera angle.  However, it would show the group moving around the store.  Next I went to the bank to report the card stolen.  This was less than an hour after they had possession of it and they had already used it at a gas station.  The bank shut the card down and issued me a new one on the spot.  I went home after that and called the Sheriff's office and they sent a Deputy to my doorstep to take my statement.  Though they had only gotten away with $15 in cash, he was headed directly to the dollar store to speak with the manager and view the video tape.  From there he was going check both locations of the gas station they chose to see if he could get video from them as well.  He was on a mission.

Though I was angry and felt personally violated, I also felt blessed that they were rushed and didn't have the time to return my wallet to it's rightful spot in my purse and left both the purse and the tote bag unzipped.  If they had had more time, I would not have realized as quickly what had happened and the damage could have been extensive.  I am also thankful that I wasn't carrying any other credit cards with me at the time - I only carry them when I intend to use them for a specific purchase or when I'm traveling.

Here we are in the middle of the holiday season and while most of us operate with a capacity filled with a spirit of love and celebration, there are others out there intent on harm.  Because of my experience, I ask that you be careful, be watchful of your surroundings and mindful that not everyone is NOT filled with the holiday spirit.  Blessings to you and yours.  May you enjoy a safe and fruitful holiday safely surrounded by friends and family.

DIY Baby's First Christmas Ornament

Here is a great idea for a baby's first Christmas ornament craft.  I would love to hang this on my tree and will pass this along to both of my son's for their families.  Only 10 days left until Christmas!

Christmas Eve Box

We always gave our boys new pajamas to open and wear on Christmas Eve but this box is an awesome idea.  I think the book Twas The Night Before Christmas should be an addition.  I hope that this post will get some mileage.  Please share the idea with your friends and family.

Fleas Navidog

Look at the manger...it made me laugh out loud!
I will take any reminder that celebrating Christmas
means celebrating the birth of Christ, our Lord and Savior,
even if the portrayal is done by our furry friends.
Happy Friday!  I'm going shopping!

Love and Devotion

An elderly man in his eighties, hurried to his doctor appointment at 8am. He wanted to finish quickly because he must be somewhere by nine. The doctor asked what the next appointment was. He proudly said that at 9am every morning he is at the hospital to eat breakfast with his wife. The doctor asked in what condition his wife was in. The man said that his wife had Alzheimers disease, and for the past 5 years she hasn't known who he is. The doctor was surprised and asked the man why he continues to go faithfully if she has no idea who he is?  The old man replied, "because I still know who she is."

Maybe this is an every day event and certainly not a heartwarming Christmas tale, but it is one of devotion and love at it's deepest root.  It's got the heart of every Hallmark movie ever made.

Ornaments With a Purpose

I thought these were really fun.  You can hang them on your tree and then enjoy a smooth cup of cocoa before returning all the decorations to their storage boxes.  You can always add a splash of Schnapps to the mug!  (That's one thing I miss about my own boys being young.  Spending a full day shopping with my Mom and sending more than half of our purchases home with her to store in her walk-in closet.  On Christmas Eve, the boys, their dad and I would arrive at their house where Mom and I would spend a few hours in the afternoon hiding out in my parents bedroom wrapping Santa gifts.  My Dad would always supply us with a glass or two of Peppermint Schnapps on ice for the endeavor.  Needless to say, we would giggle our way through a lot of paper and tape!  Those were special times that I will forever hold dear in my heart.)  And though we won't be filling a Santa closet this year, I am looking forward to Christmas shopping with Mom on Friday.  There are a lot of giggles on our horizon!  I can't wait Mom!  P.S.  We can't get lost in the mall here!

Country Club Plaza

I do miss this sight through the holidays.  This is a picture of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.  It is tradition to throw the switch to light it up on the evening of Thanksgiving and they twinkle until New Year's Day.  With the horse drawn carriages and many, many stores and restaurants in which to enjoy a day of shopping or an evening of celetration, it's festive and beautiful.  It's a great place to visit with family, friends, or that special someone.

Glass Bowl Snowman

This is an awesome snowman project.
It would definitely be on my list if I had someplace to show it off.
Stay tuned for more fun craft ideas!
In the meantime, have a great Monday.

Sending Christmas Cards

Please keep this in mind when you're making out Christmas cards this season.  The cost of an additional card and stamp are nothing compared to the thanks we should give to our American Soldiers.  I will definitely be sending this one.

Holiday To Do List

These are the things that I want to achieve through the Christmas season this year.  Working for American Greetings, I've seen enough craziness in the retail market in just the past two weeks that causes me to step back and re-evaluate the circumstances of my life.  I don't want this Christmas to be about expensive and numerous gifts.  I'm not saying that I won't be gift giving this year, I just want the gifts to be heartfelt and meaningful.  (At least for the adults!)  I want to enjoy the peace and love of the season and not get so caught up on the retail rat race.  There would be no Christmas without the birth of Christ.  Let's ponder on that a bit and then celebrate the one gift that no one else can give.

Believe

This is our last day of November which leads into the wondrous countdown to Christmas.  December is a time for miracles.  It's a time for community outreach.  It's a time to be selfless.  It's a time to rejoice.  It's a time to gather with friends and family.  But most of all, it's a time to celebrate the gift of a baby that we were long ago given and to share the love that Christ brought to an undeserving world.  Don't get so carried away with the retail business of the holiday.  Gifts are a grand gesture but if we keep the true meaning alive in each of us, something truly wonderful will happen.

Frosty Up North

As we watched the forecast yesterday in our shorts and flip flops, we were thankful that we were no longer living in the Midwest.  Our thoughts and prayers went out to everyone we know and love that had to deal with the deteriorating weather.  I do miss the cooler falls but not the sleet and ice.  Take care and be safe.

Give Your Best

Be gracious and thankful today and every day.
Do your best to be who God meant for you to be.
Our lives on earth are short lived.
Our inheritance is so much more than a few meager belongings.
Remember always, to whom you belong...
and act accordingly.

Let's Be Pretty

This is pretty good advice!

(Have you ever looked at a word and it just doesn't look like
it's spelled right, even though it is?  That just happened to me
with the word pretty.  I must be losing my mind!)

Bedtime Stories

Since my grand babies aren't here, I have to resort to telling bedtime stories to my pups!  Actually, I usually do read in bed before falling asleep.  If I read a paragraph or two out loud, my little guys curl right up and go to sleep.  Yes - they are spoiled.

A Test Run

Since it's only a week away, I'm sharing a little Thanksgiving humor!
We have found spiked apple cider to be our "happy" drink of the day...
Maybe we need a test run?  Cheers!

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

In love we find out who we want to be.

In war we find out who we are.

FRANCE, 1939

In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France … but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.
Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can … completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.

With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

I promised that I would share the book I just finished with you as I could not put it down.  The Nightingale was by far one of the best books I have ever read.  I won't share with you the story itself, no spoilers here, other than to say that though it was a fiction read, the circumstances these sisters faced were real.  We are so pampered in today's society that hardship such as this - what people are forced to do for survival seems like a history lesson to a lot of us.  It made me appreciate the hidden strengths of women throughout the ages.  It made me take a hard look at my life and to be thankful for everything I have, including the freedom others fought for on our behalf.  Please pick up a copy of the book today and let me know your thoughts upon it's conclusion.  I would truly like to know if the story impacted you in the same ways that it did me.

Here and There

The book I've been reading has certainly taken me "there" a lot in the past two weeks.  Every chance I've gotten, I've had my nose buried in it.  I'll tell you more about this awesome read on Monday.  For now, I've got to hurry up and get my chores done so I can dive in again!  Have a great weekend.

The Smells of Fall

Bring a pan full of orange rinds to a boil and then simmer on the stove top to give your home the smell of fall.  It's easy and cheaper than other store bought methods of air freshener or fragrance.

It's Beach Friday

Hello, Friday! It's good to see you.  Throw your flip flops in the pile and let's walk barefoot along the beach.  Let the cool water glide over your toes and breathe deep the salty sea air.  It's a calm and quiet morning.  Sunshine glitters across the water and the tide is low. Take another deep breath and let the peace of a calm ocean, warm sandy beach, and easy breeze wash over you. Now, smile and take on the day.

Personality Test

Look at the trees and choose the one that is immediately most appealing to you. Don’t think about it too long, just choose, see what first appeals to you and find out what your choice says about your personality.   Side note:  I picked #8.

The results . . .

1. You are a generous and moral (not to confuse with moralizing) person. You always work on self-improvement. You are very ambitious and have very high standards. People might think that communicating with you is difficult, but for you, it isn't easy to be who you are. You work very hard but you are not in the least selfish. You work because you want to improve the world. You have a great capacity to love people until they hurt you. But even after they do. . . you keep loving. Very few people can appreciate everything you do as well as you deserve.

2. You are a fun, honest person. You are very responsible and like taking care of others. You believe in putting in an honest day's work and accept many work-related responsibilities. You have a very good personality and people come to trust you easily. You are bright, witty and fast-thinking. You always have an interesting story to tell.

3.You are a smart and thoughtful person. You are a great thinker. Your thoughts and ideas are the most important. You like to think about your theories and views alone. You are an introvert. You get along with those who likes to think and learn. You spend a lot of time, thinking about morality. You are trying to do what is right, even if the majority of society does not agree with you.

4. You are perceptive and philosophical person. You are a unique, one soul of your kind. Next to you there's no one even slightly similar to you. You are intuitive and a bit quirky. You are often misunderstood, and it hurts you. You need personal space. Your creativity needs to be developed, it requires respect of others. You are a person who clearly sees the light and dark sides of life. You are very emotional.

5. You are self-assured and in charge. You are very independent. Your guiding principle in life is 'I'll do it my way.'. You are very self-reliant and know how to stay strong for yourself and the people you Love. You know exactly what you want and are not afraid of pursuing your dreams. The only thing you demand from people is honesty. You are strong enough to accept the truth.

6. You are kind and sensitive. People relate to you very well. You have many friends and you love helping them. You have this warm and bright aura that makes people feel good when they are around you. Every day, you think about what you can do to improve yourself. You want to be interesting, insightful and unique. More than anybody else in the world, you need to love. You are even ready to love those who don't love you back.

7. You are happy and unflappable. You are a very sensitive and understanding person. You are a great listener who know how to be non-judgmental. You believe that everybody has their own journey in life. You are open to new people and events. You are highly resistant to stress and rarely worry. Normally, you are very relaxed. You always manage to have a good time and never lose your way.

8. You are charming and energetic. You are a fun person who knows how to make people laugh. You live in a state of harmony with the universe. You are spontaneous and enthusiastic. You never say no to an adventure. Often, you end up surprising and even shocking people. But that's just how you are. . . You always remain true to yourself. You have many interests and if something proves of interest to you, you will not rest until you acquire a profound knowledge of this area.

9. You are optimistic and lucky. You believe that life is a gift and you try to achieve as much as possible and put this gift to the best use possible. You are very proud of your achievements. You are ready to stick by the people you care about through thick and thin. You have a very healthy approach to life. The glass is (at least) half full for you.
